フェンシングの折れ剣を刃物やメダルに再生

J-STORIES ー竹のようにしなるフェンシングの剣は、激しい試合や練習で使われるため、早くて1か月、長くても半年ほどで折れたり亀裂が入ったりして廃棄されることが多い。捨てられるだけの無数の剣を何とか再利用できないか。日本選手が抱いた長年の思いが今年1月、老舗企業などの協力で具体的なSDGs(持続可能な世界を目指す国連の開発目標)プロジェクトとして動き出した。

折れた剣の再利用を呼び掛けたのは、昨年の東京五輪フェンシング男子エペ団体で日本に初の金メダルをもたらした見延和靖さん。フェンシングを始めた高校生時代から折れた剣の廃棄に心を痛めていたという見延さんは、東京五輪の後、折れた剣の再利用をめざすプロジェクトを立ち上げ、「日本スポーツSDGs協会」(東京都中央区)との協力で準備を始めた。

その再生作業を請け負ったのは、見延さんの出身地である福井県越前市の老舗企業、武生特殊鋼材だ。同社は、航空機やロケットに使用され、フェンシングの剣にも使われているマルエージング鋼という特殊鋼を取り扱った経験もある。

同社が折れた剣から包丁を試作したところ、切れ味に関わる硬度などの数値も使用可能な水準に仕上がった。今後は、ナイフや包丁、メダルへの加工を予定しており、将来的には日本で生産・加工が行われていないフェンシング剣への再生・再利用をめざしている。

「折れた剣を再生するプロジェクトは、海外でも行っておらず、日本が初の取り組みになると思う。このプロジェクトを世界の方にも知っていただきたい」と見延さんは同協会のインタビューで語っている。同協会もJ-Storiesに対し「今後このような動きがフェンシング界全体に広がって欲しい」と期待を示した。

フェンシングの剣は日本では製造されていない。武生特殊鋼材はJ-Storiesの取材に対し、今回の包丁への試作加工を通して、フェンシングに使用されている特殊鋼(マルエージング鋼)の特性を把握することができたと説明、今後は自社が持つ特殊加工技術の活用も検討して、様々な用途に再利用していきたいとしている。

同社社長の河野通郎さんは「50人規模の企業だが、実力を養うために様々なことにチャレンジし会社としての視野を広げていきたい」と意気込みを語った。
